Our vision is to champion a thriving Black arts and culture ecosystem— an interconnected network of cultural hubs that enriches Oakland with economic opportunity, community-driven safety, and dynamic cultural expression.

Through Cultural Reforestation,  we’re dedicated to restoring and reviving Black spaces of belonging that have been depleted by systemic inequities. We believe in reclaiming local expertise, amplifying social capital, and creating a foundation for Black-led legacy organizations rooted in Black-owned land.

We see Oakland budding with Black-led organizations that steward the city’s rich Black culture, cultivating Black spaces for a thriving Black future.

People & Sytems

We believe in the transformative power of radical institution building. In a world where systemic change is essential, our cooperative stands as a beacon of empowerment and self-determination. By fostering a community-driven approach to building institutions, we aim to reshape the narrative, providing spaces where Black voices, perspectives, and leadership flourish.

Mutual Aid

We recognize that collective strength is the key to shaping our destinies. By connecting Black-led organizations through mutual support, we amplify our capacity for change, resilience, and community-driven empowerment. Together, we navigate challenges, share resources, and forge a path toward a future where self-determination is not just a goal but a lived reality, fueled by the unyielding power of mutual aid and collaborative solidarity.

Funding

We understand that building long-term sustainability for Black arts and culture requires financial support. By raising the funds necessary to grow, we empower Black-led cultural organizations to secure their future. Our cooperative fundraising efforts are rooted in community solidarity, allowing us to harness collective resources to support infrastructure, mutual aid, and cultural permanence. We invite donors and community members to join us in this mission, as every contribution helps us grow stronger, ensuring that Oakland’s Black arts ecosystem thrives.

Storytelling

Rooted in solidarity, we weave narratives that not only reflect the richness of our experiences but also serve as a catalyst for positive change. Through authenticity and expressions of Black Joy, we amplify the voices and experiences of our members, fostering a tapestry of narratives that reflect the depth and resilience of our experiences. Through the art of storytelling, we explore the unique journeys, triumphs, and experiences of leaders navigating the day-to-day realities of acquiring real estate through a cooperative lens. We believe that we must document and tell our own stories of strength, and creativity, as a tool of liberation and knowledge transfer to the wider cultural arts ecosystem.

Space

We are committed to securing permanent, Black-owned spaces in Oakland that reflect the deep cultural legacy of our community. By working collaboratively to rent and acquire real estate, we’re building a future where Black-led cultural enterprises have a stable foundation to thrive. Our vision extends beyond just property ownership—it’s about ensuring that Black arts and culture have a lasting home in the city, one that is protected from displacement and gentrification. Through cooperative ownership, we’re forging spaces where creativity, empowerment, and community flourish for generations to come.

Guided by the ethos of Cultural Reforestation, BLACSspace works to restore what systemic inequities have stripped away. It nurtures shared power, builds resilience, and reclaims local expertise to lay the groundwork for Black-led legacies rooted in Black-owned land. Each act of mutual aid, every story shared, and every connection made strengthens the roots of this cooperative, ensuring that Black arts and culture in Oakland not only endure but flourish.

BLACspace embodies regeneration, where each organization within the Cooperative becomes a vital part of a larger canopy, sheltering and nourishing the community. Together, they reimagine spaces where Black culture can thrive—today and for generations to come.

 values

  • Accountability: We acknowledge and take ownership of our mistakes or errors. When we make mistakes we own them and don’t shift blame onto others. We are accountable for our deliverables, agreements and commitments.

Honoring Commitments: Trust is built and maintained when individuals consistently deliver on their commitments. Whether meeting deadlines, fulfilling project requirements, or following through on agreements, members who demonstrate reliability and accountability foster trust among their colleagues.

Communication: We listen actively, speak honestly, and give credit where it is due. We know that conflict is inherent in this process and lean into trust to foster an atmosphere where different perspectives are valued and encouraged. We practice nonviolent communication, communicating with respect, empathy, understanding, acceptance, appreciation, and compassion.

Transformative Justice: When conflict arises as we know it will, we commit to engage in open dialogue, to work towards a solution that upholds our values and maintains trust. We humbly seek to understand one another and prize resolution over the desire to be heard. We intentionally check our hearts, identify the root of our disagreements, and practice forgiveness. Rather than burning bridges, we always leave the door open for resolution and continued healing.

Transparency: We openly and honestly share information, budgets, decisions, and actions relevant to the cooperative. In doing so, we aim to correct the past harms that inhibit the free flow of information, causing corruption, oppression, and mismanagement of resources.

Confidentiality: We hold a confidential space within the cooperative where members can share their thoughts, feelings, and struggles freely. We agree to bear one another’s confidential information with care and not share it outside the cooperative unless express permission is granted and not to speak negatively about one another outside of the cooperative. (see Communication Protocols)

  • African-centered: We center Black leadership, explore Black futures, & develop Black processes to build Black power through an Afro-Indigenous lens.

Iwa Pele: We aim to be of high moral character. Do what is right even when it is difficult.

Honoring Ancestors: We acknowledge that our work is built upon that of those who came before us and that we are embedded in deep lineages. We aspire to become worthy ancestors for those who will come after us.

Creativity: We believe creativity is a practice and tool.  We actively cultivate, harness, and imbed creative thinking, problem-solving, and innovation into our work. We resist status quo solutions and instead encourage and support new ideas.

Restoration: We reject the idea that liberation work has to be depleting. Showing up fully rested, having time away from work, incorporating wellness practices into our day-to-day workflow, and showing up as our whole, authentic selves enhances our outcomes.

  • Cultural Self Determination: We believe that Black folks should control all aspects of our lives. We seek to create structures that center Black leadership, decision-making, and Black joy and circulate resources within the Black community.

Cultural Reforestation: We believe in intentionally restocking and rebuilding Black spaces of belonging that have been depleted through systemic inequality. Our collective efforts are centered on seeding a thriving Black cultural arts ecosystem that affirms the life of the individual, family, community, our business enterprises, and the solidarity economy. This is century work, and we are in it for the long game.

Safety: We intentionally create a workplace of safety and trust within and among member groups. We move at the speed of trust, and heal from trauma in relationship with one another. We respect and honor our differences, allowing for freedom of belief and fair expression without shame or judgment.

Liberation: We look towards a future where all are free. We do our part, both within ourselves and in our collective work, to dismantle systems of oppression and move towards a collective future where we have the freedom to make and animate choices, respond to emergencies, and to plan sustainable futures confidently. We create a space that allows for individual freedom through a culture of acceptance/showing up and existing as you are.

Solidarity: We believe in the collective spirit and a sense of unity among members, where individuals prioritize the well-being and success of the entire group. It involves a shared commitment to common goals, mutual support, and a recognition of interdependence. No matter what, our organizations have allegiance to our vision and purpose of cultural reforestation.

  • Cultural reforestation: We show up for the long game of cultural ecosystem development with creativity, connection, and joy.

Cooperativism: We commit to democratic governance and find mutual benefit in sharing.

Ownership & Self-Determination: The enterprise is wholly owned by members, members take active leadership roles, and power is shared.

Trust: We intentionally build trust within and among member groups, move at the speed of trust, and heal from trauma in relationship with one another over time.

African-centered: We center Black leadership and explore & develop Black processes to build Black power.

Showing up: We commit to showing up fully and consistently over time.

We are weaving as we unweave—navigating the process of unwinding and disentangling from the transactional nature of capitalism as we strengthen relationships that generate potential for communal thriving.
